The naturopathic method of seed cycling is suggested to help regulate hormonal imbalance through the consumption of seeds such as pumpkin, flax, sesame, and sunflower during different phases of the menstrual cycle. During the follicular phase (from day one of the cycle till ovulation), a combination of flax and pumpkin seeds is used–this recipe for seed cycling bliss balls for the follicular phase recommended by nutritionist Shweta Shah of EatFit247 is perfect for the first half of your menstrual cycle.

During the luteal phase of the menstrual cycle, which lasts from after ovulation till the first day of the next period (days 15-28 in a 28 day cycle), progesterone level rises, and some oestrogen is produced as well. In the seed cycling method, the luteal phase involves consuming a combination of sesame and sunflower seeds. Shweta Shah recommends a recipe using this combination to make bliss laddoos that can potentially help during this phase to manage issues such as PCOS, PMS, hot flashes, ovarian cysts, endometriosis and menopausal symptoms, when taken alongside the flax and pumpkin seed bliss balls during the follicular phase.

Both sesame and sunflower seeds are rich in magnesium. According to a review article published in Magnesium Research, magnesium supplementation can be effective in managing issues such as menstrual cramps and premenstrual syndrome.

Sesame seeds are also high in lignans (plant compounds), which have slight oestrogen-like or anti-oestrogenic qualities. A study published in the Journal of Nutrition showed that consumption of sesame powder can have some benefits for postmenopausal women. Sunflower seeds also have a high Vitamin E content, which plays an important role in many body functions.
