The secret to a healthy body is to make it work hard and keep it fit, and the secret to a healthy mind is to work towards keeping it calm. If you think about this, what we do in our daily lives is, in fact, the opposite. We must learn good mental health habits and practice them regularly to create a balance in UR psychological and physical health. If UR practice is occasional, the benefit will be like a band-aid. It can help you tide over a small wound, but U will be lost trying to deal with the big blows in life.

5 Pillars of Strength

So, let’s look at five habits which can become UR 5 Pillars of strength with regular practice.

Exercise is beneficial and necessary for the body and UR mind. When U R anxious, worried, pressured and stressed, UR breathing and heartbeat becomes faster. It is as if U R out for a jog, but U R sitting in UR office, or at home. It is necessary to include a few cardio exercises to keep UR heart and lungs fit. During stress, many hormones and neurochemicals and sugar are also released. These hormones and neurochemicals tend to stay in UR bloodstream till U indulge in some physical activity. Even if UR mentally exhausted, a daily exercise program is a must! It will help U burn all the hormones and neurochemicals that make U physically tired, yet relaxed state. You will feel more energetic and calmer at the end of UR exercise session. Exercise is considered to be the best internal antidepressant and mood stabilizer!

Breathing Exercises & Relaxation Techniques are very useful in calming and centring UR mind. If UR thoughts are racing all over the place and U can’t think with clarity, sit down in a quiet area, dim the lights, close UR eyes and focus on UR breath. Inhale slowly and exhale even slower. To teach yourself, count UR breath in and then increase the count while breathing out. If U practice Yoga, learn Pranayam and specifically, Anulom Vilom. Practising these breathing techniques will help U know how to concentrate on UR breath calmly. Diaphragmatic or abdominal breathing is also very beneficial in reducing stress and anxiety. As you get comfortable, U can increase the time of each session. You can even start practising relaxation techniques like; progressive muscular relaxation, visualization, Yoga Nidra etc.

The 80:20 Pareto Principle is quite simple. But it does require you to pause, think and then step forward into action. So, think about all the little and big problems that are bothering you. Maybe U could write them down. How many are they? Ten or multiples of 10? If the no. is 10, which ones do U think are the root of most of UR problems? If U can’t decide, think of the two most important ones. For now, forget about the other eight and let’s focus on two only. Think about how U will resolve these two issues, take advice if needed and U will find that these two solutions (20%) have given you 80% relief. The balance 8 points may slide away on its own, or with a little effort, U can manage these concerns efficiently.

Duck’s Back. A Duck spends most of its time in the water, but have U ever seen it wet? When a duck emerges out of the water, it merely flaps its wings, and it is dry. Oil glands beneath its wings ensure that all the water flows out. Why can we not learn to keep ourselves dry and away from constant burdens in the same way? If there is an argumentative person at work or home, do U need to engage with that person at all? If particular neighbour’s or perhaps colleagues are frequently hostile towards U, do U benefit from absorbing this energy? Allow these comments and this negativity to wash off and do not engage. The more U engage, the worse it will get. You have already realized this is not a battle U want or need to fight. Let it slide!

Nurture UR circle of friends. Women have realized the comfort in having a small but strong set of friends. They must be UR friends, not family friends or couple of friends. This way, all of you know that U R invested in each other and not torn in UR loyalties. You can turn to this group to unburden when troubles are weighing you down. The act of unburdening in an environment where U R not judged, but accepted with positive regard will ease the burden a great deal. You will find UR solutions in the comfort of their backing. At other times you can meet to exchange a few laughs, to feel light, easy and lively! When this group gives U feedback, U will be open to listening to it.

This will soon become UR circle of strength. Suffering from mental health concerns isn’t shameful, take charge of UR mental health and heal URLife!
