Menstrual cramps are pains in the belly and pelvic areas that are experienced by a woman as a result of her menstrual period. Menstrual cramps are often mistaken for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) because the symptoms of both disorders can often be experienced as a continual process. Many women often experience both PMS and menstrual cramps.
Medically, menstrual cramps are known as dysmenorrhoea. Dysmenorrhoea is of two types: primary and secondary.
There is no underlying gynaecological condition which causes the pain in primary dysmenorrhoea. This may begin between six months to a year after menarche (the starting of menstruation).
Uterine contractions cause menstrual cramps. The cramping sensation is intensified when clots or pieces of bloody tissue from the lining of the uterus through the cervix, especially if a woman’s cervical canal is narrow. The difference between more painful menstrual cramps and those that are less painful may be related to a woman’s prostaglandin levels. Women with menstrual cramps have elevated levels of prostaglandins in the endometrium (uterine lining) when compared with women who do not experience pains. These cramps are incredibly similar to what a pregnant woman goes through when she is given the medicine prostaglandin to induce labour.
Menstrual cramps begin in the lower abdomen and pelvis. The discomfort can extend to the lower back or legs. The pains can be quite painful or merely a dull ache. They can be periodic or continual. Menstrual cramps usually start shortly before the menstrual period, peak within twenty-four hours after the onset of the bleeding, and subside again after a day or two.
They may be accompanied by a headache and nausea, which can lead, although infrequently, to the point of vomiting. Either constipation or diarrhoea can also accompany menstrual cramps because the prostaglandins, which cause smooth muscles to contract, are found in both the uterus and intestinal tract. Some women experience an urge to urinate more frequently.

Home Remedy For Menstrual Cramps
Dry roast 4 tbsp of coriander seeds along with ten peppercorns
1 tbsp of ginger powder
1 tbsp of white sesame seeds and 3 tbsp of fennel.
Powder this and store in an airtight container.
Have 1 tsp thrice a day along with a small piece of mishri (rock sugar). Continue having this until the second day of your period.
